Web Design & Development FAQ
What makes you different from other web development companies?
We are a small, experienced team that both guides and listens.
- Performance focus: Many sites are put together using pre-made themes and plugins. They generally end up with slow performance, weak SEO, and limited updatability. With us, your site is built properly from the ground up, with each part structured for speed, mobile, SEO, and scalability.
- Responsibility: We take full responsibility for how your website functions. There’s no passing blame between hosting, sales, or development. We cover your site’s speed, mobile experience, and any features like ecommerce, forms, or listings. If something isn’t working the way it should, we fix it.
- Expert-led: You’re working directly with an experienced developer. That means clear guidance, fast decisions, higher performance, and more flexibility.
- Long-term thinking: Your website is a business asset, not a quick template. It’s structured to scale with you, without constant rework or patching things together later.
- Ongoing support by the same team that built your site: After launch, you’re not handed off. The same team that built your site continues to support it, so that everything stays reliable and up to date.
Do you have experience with businesses like mine?
You name it, we’ve done it!
Mike Medrek, owner and lead developer, has been building websites since 2009, with over 550 projects completed. In our portfolio alone, you’ll find over 100 different categories.
We’ve worked with industries like trades, manufacturing, consulting, professional services, and ecommerce, along with more unique ones like master furniture artists, ski lift builders, town festivals, political campaigns, disaster relief foundations, and fishing charters.
But the success of a project isn’t just about our industry experience. There’s a commonality across every project: we take the time to understand your business and audience, then shape the site around what your customers need to see in order to choose you. That’s what makes the process smooth, and the website successful, even if your industry is new to us.
Why not just use a website builder like Wix or Squarespace?
It depends on what you need your website to do, and how seriously you’re treating it as part of your business.
When to go with a builder:
- You don’t have the budget for anything more
- You just need something up quickly
- It’s just temporary
- You’re okay with a generic look
- You don’t rely on your website for leads or revenue
- You have time to figure it out yourself
Go with a builder when you just need a stepping stone. Something is better than nothing.
When to go with a custom website:
- You want to enhance how your brand feels
- Your site needs to be fast and search engine friendly
- You want custom features
- You don’t want to hit a ceiling and need a full rebuild
- You’d rather spend your time running your business
- You want a reliable team handling your website
Go with a custom site when you need your website to actively bring in business.
Can I use AI to build my website?
You can use tools like ChatGPT, Claude, or other AI platforms to generate layouts or code. The problem is that this usually doesn’t save time or cost when the goal is a professional website.
AI is not good at:
This requires:
- A defined, branded look and feel
- Clear structure and hierarchy
- Thoughtful user flow
- Content aligned with business goals
AI will typically generate:
- Generic layouts without much detail
- Inconsistent elements from section to section
- No underlying system for components or behavior
- Code that doesn’t translate cleanly into a CMS like WordPress
AI can be useful for exploring ideas and direction, and for helping with specific, well-defined coding tasks. It doesn’t replace professional design and development, and it often creates more work to get things into a usable, maintainable state.

How much does a website cost?
Rather than trying to force every project into a fixed number, we structure things around what you actually need. We have several website design & development tiers, and can customize your plan from there.
That said, small to mid-sized business websites fall somewhere between a few thousand dollars into five figures, depending on what you need. Here’s the reason for the range:
- Strategy: Projects with deeper planning around structure, messaging, and audience take more time up front (and perform better long-term).
- Design: A simple, clean design takes less time than a more detailed, interactive, conversion-focused experience.
- Content: If we’re creating your content, that adds time. If you’re providing it, that keeps things lighter.
- Functionality: Standard informational sites are on the lower end. Custom features, integrations, or more advanced interactivity increase cost.
When considering budget or package level, it’s important to remember that a website is not just an expense, it’s a revenue-generating investment. Its job is to convert visitors into customers and bring in business. What you put into it directly impacts what you get out of it.
How long does it take to design and develop a website?
Most web projects take 1-3 months to complete, depending on the level of strategy, design, and functionality involved. Here’s how that breaks down:
- Design: Lower-tier projects move quickly, with initial designs ready in 1–2 weeks. More advanced projects, with deeper strategy and higher-end design, usually take 2–3 weeks.
- Revisions: We include 2–3 rounds of revisions, and each round typically takes 2–3 days depending on feedback and changes.
- Development: Once the design is approved, development usually takes 3–4 weeks. Projects with more advanced features or custom functionality may take closer to 4–6 weeks.
- Fine tuning: This is quick on simpler builds, and more in depth on higher-end projects where we’re refining UX, interactivity, and performance.
- Launch: Once everything is approved, launch is immediate.
A few things can affect timing:
- How quickly feedback and approvals come in
- How much custom functionality is involved
- Whether content is ready or needs to be created
We’re flexible and can accommodate most timelines!
What is your website development process like?
We guide you from initial planning through launch and ongoing support.
- Meet & greet: We start with a quick call to get acquainted, learn about your business, and talk through your goals. From there, we recommend a plan of action.
- Strategy: Pro and Premium projects start with a focused strategy phase where we shape your site’s structure, messaging, and overall direction around how your customers think, decide, and buy. This sets the foundation for everything that follows.
- Content: You can choose to have us handle your content, or provide it to us. We’ll make sure everything is clear, polished, and ready for launch.
- Custom design: We design your site around your audience, industry, brand, and preferences, with revisions to refine it until it’s exactly where it needs to be.
- Development: When the design is approved, we build it into a fully functional website under a private URL, including any custom features.
- Fine tuning: We handle full QA and testing across devices, refine the user experience, and make sure everything is working smoothly. You’ll have the opportunity to review and request any final adjustments.
- Launch: Once everything is finalized and approved, we launch your site on your domain.
- Ongoing support: We continue to maintain and support your website so it stays secure, fast, and performing as it should.
Will I own my website once it’s finished?
Yes, you will. You’re paying for a product, and it’s yours: the site, the design, and everything that goes with it.
We’ve worked with clients who came from situations where access was restricted or delayed. That’s not how we operate. If you ever need to move your site or work with someone else, we’ll make sure you have what you need to do that.
We’re here to support your website long term, and most clients stay with us for that reason. But if things change, you still have full ownership of your website.
What happens if something goes wrong after launch?
Short answer: we fix it.
When we build a site, we take responsibility for how it performs after launch. You paid for something that should work as intended. If it doesn’t, we make it right.
- If an issue comes up shortly after launch, that’s on us. We handle it.
- If it’s been a couple of months, it depends. Websites require ongoing maintenance, but if it’s something that traces back to development, we’ll fix it.
- If it’s been longer, or the site has been modified outside of us, that’s when it’s outside our responsibility.
That’s why most clients stay with us. Ongoing website maintenance keeps everything stable, secure, and performing the way it should, with an experienced team behind you.
The goal is simple: a website you don’t have to worry about.
Website Maintenance FAQ
Do I actually need ongoing website maintenance?
Yes. A website is layered software, and it needs to be maintained to stay secure, fast, and reliable. Here’s why:
Software Updates
Your site’s core system, plugins, and server software all need to be updated in order to keep everything secure, compatible, and running properly as technology changes.
Threat Protection
Your site needs protection against the swarms of bots constantly scanning for vulnerabilities. Security gaps need to be closed before they can be exploited.
Downtime & Response
Monitoring allows issues like downtime to be handled quickly. If something goes wrong, it’s caught and fixed before it turns into days or weeks.
Performance
Websites need tuning as they undergo updates, and as technology evolves. Doing this maintains quick load times, which leads to better engagement and more business.
Growth & SEO
Websites that stay active rank better in search engines. Being on a maintenance plan also encourages regular content updates, which strengthens your SEO.
Backups & Recovery
Backups protect your site from data loss and allow it to be restored quickly if needed. No need to worry about rebuilding, or being down and out.
What can happen if a website isn’t maintained?
- Outdated software: The core system, plugins, and server software fall out of date within a month or two. That opens security holes, slows things down, and starts causing features to break.
- Malware & hacking: Security holes opened by outdated software often result in malware injections or hacking.
Who would want to hack my website? Am I really a target?
The answer is not “who”, it’s “what”. Most website traffic is made up of bots constantly scanning for vulnerabilities. On an unmaintained site, it’s a matter of time before something gets in. That can mean injected spam links, viruses, stolen data, or losing control of your site.
Cleaning this up isn’t quick, and if Google detects it, your site can be flagged or removed from search and browsers.
- SEO decline: As a site sits unchanged, rankings can slip and visibility drops. Without regular updates and improvements, it becomes harder for customers to find you.
- Broken features & slowdowns: As software falls out of sync, things stop working and performance starts to suffer. Forms don’t send, pages display incorrectly, and load times increase, making the overall experience feel unreliable.
- Downtime you don’t know about: Sites can go down for hours or days without any alert. Most owners find out when a customer tells them, which means missed opportunities the entire time.
- Crashes and data loss: Outdated sites can experience crashes or corruption that breaks them completely. Without reliable backups, that can mean rebuilding from scratch or losing the site permanently.
What if I don’t plan to update my website often?
That’s actually when you need a maintenance plan most.
We can’t overstate the amount of bad traffic websites live in. They’re constantly being crawled, probed, and tested by bots looking for a way in.
On top of that, you still have the underlying risks:
- Outdated software opening security holes
- Downtime that goes unnoticed
- Performance slowly declining
- Crashes and potential data loss
Content updates are a small part of the picture. A maintenance plan covers all the bases with monitoring, security, backups, software updates, and fixes if anything goes wrong.
How much does website maintenance cost?
Most businesses spend between $100 and $400 per month on website maintenance, depending on the level of support.
That range reflects everything from baseline coverage to fully managed support with ongoing work and priority service.
What’s included in a maintenance plan?
A maintenance plan covers the ongoing work required to keep your website secure, stable, and performing well. Not just updates, but the environment, monitoring, and hands-on support behind it.
